Influencers: freedom or manipulation?
Life. We’re living in this mad era where the world is running too fast. There’s a lot of stuff going on, we are bombed with so many info all the time and there’s a lot to choose from.
On the one hand it makes us more aware of the world and more judicious about what we’re consuming. But on the other hand it makes us more influential. We do what others are doing and buy what others are buying just because we think we should, challenging our own individuality. We want to fit in no matter what. It’s like we still are at high school trying to be like the popular guys out there, following what they do and wear.
So are we being manipulated?
It’s like we still are at high school trying to be like the popular guys out there, following what they do and wear.
The thing is, there’s nothing wrong about being influenced every now and then. We’ve all been influenced by someone or something at some point. And we’ll still be. The problem is to be too influential and think that everybody knows it all unless us. The problem is to buy things we don’t even like just because someone (or everybody) has it. That is totally wrong.
Everyday we’re influenced to buy something or to be someone else who aren’t.
People prettier than us with big shiny smiles manipulate us with their apparent perfect lives, perfect husbands, wives, kids and friends.
However, let’s do not forget that behind the perfection character there is a person. Everybody has problems, issues and imperfect lives. No one is perfect. Some of us are happier than others, but we’re all humans. Being able to see that is what can protect us on the manipulation game.
Anyway, it’s positive to admire other people. To fight for a better life, because we’re inspired by other stories. To buy something new because we saw it on another person and really liked it. It makes us better. But we have to be ourselves and be proud of our identity.
Talking about me, i know i’m influenced from time to time. You see, i was obsessed with a glitter pair of Vans i wasn’t able to found anywhere. On the other day i was at the mall, and saw another pair of Vans in pale pink and gold dots and i got immediately obsessed about them too. I really loved the sneakers, but in my mind i couldn’t stop thinking that i didn’t know if i’ve loved it because i did or because Vans are trendy now. So, i didn’t buy them. Until i’m 100% sure that i want them because i really love them i won’t buy them. This is me being faithful to myself. As i was when i bought this blue tweed jacket i’m wearing. I’ve loved it in the moment i’ve seen it. Yes, i’m obsessed with tweed jackets since ever.
I mean, each one of us is unique and our freedom lives in our singularities. We may be influenced by others but we should never be manipulated or lose our identity. We are what we are. At the end of the day, that’s what make us special.
